FDA News

FDA news is available online at the website for the FDA. On the home page of the FDA (www.fda.gov) is a category in the middle of the page labeled “News and Events.” The current day’s news is listed right there and then you can go to the “Newsroom.”

The “Newsroom” has several categories to choose from. The newsroom category itself contains:

  • Press releases
  • Announcements,
  • Media contacts
  • Transcripts

There is a category: “What’s New by Topic.” It includes updates on information about:

  • Food
  • Drugs
  • Vaccines
  • Medical devices and products
  • Animal and veterinary issues
  • Cosmetics

The next category is: “Approvals of FDA-Regulated Products” that contains new drugs and complex medical devices that must meet stringent guidelines before being made available for consumer use. It is divided into the following groups:

  • Drugs
  • Biological products
  • Medical devices
  • Animal drugs
  • Food additives

A “Public Health Focus” category is an archive of featured topics and public health issues. It is divided into the following groups:

  • Food
  • Drugs
  • Medical Devices
  • Vaccines, blood and biologics
  • Animal and Veterinary
  • Radiation-emitting products
  • Seasonal topics
  • Cross-cutting topics
  • Tobacco
  • Cosmetics

The next FDA news category is “Testimony.” It includes testimony by FDA officials before House and Senate Committees and Subcommittees. The testimony is listed by month and year.

In the “Speeches” category are lists of FDA officials’ speeches by year. For example, in 2010, In September and August, the Commissioner of Food and Drugs spoke at a public meeting and again at Peking University in Beijing.

There is a “Meetings, Conferences, and Workshops” category. The meetings are listed by topic again:

  • Food
  • Drugs
  • Medical devices
  • Biologics
  • Animal and veterinary
  • Cosmetics
  • Combination products
  • Science and research
  • Advisory committee calendar

Some of the meeting information available is more than five years old.  There is another section called “Stakeholder Meetings”. Key stakeholders include:

  • Consumer organizations
  • Researchers
  • Scientists
  • Industry representatives

The last category available on this web page of “News and Events” is “Interactive Media.” It contains a listing of:

  • Videos
  • Podcasts
  • Blogs
  • Widgets
  • More

Once again the FDA news lends itself to transparency. Everything they do, say or write about is available for the public to see. It is an interesting web page to peruse.
